My name is Tim Thompson and I am the owner of SPF Insurance Services. Let's start at the beginning, and I'll tell you how I got to this point.
At the age of 15, I was diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic, and that fact became the focus of much of my life.
I graduated from Colorado State University in 1983 as an Electrical Engineer and went to work in the Semiconductor industry. I loved my jobs and being able to learn new information every day. The electronics industry was undergoing tremendous growth during my early career, and as an engineer and then a marketing director I was given stock options in the two startup companies I worked with.
After completing a 4 year period with the 2nd startup company, I was burned out from traveling the globe. I had spent 70% of my time away from home for work, and I knew that we had enough assets from the stock options I earned during the 19 years I worked in the high-tech industry, so I decided to "retire."
Because of my diabetes, I knew that I could not get regular health insurance, so I opted to keep my last employer's health plan using COBRA for 18 months.
My retirement started with a flurry of travel with my wife, and after a year we began to settle into a daily routine. I would play golf, read a book, or work in the garden. After a while, I realized that I was getting bored.
Everyone I knew still worked full time. When I played golf it was with folks that were over 60, and I was still in my early 40's.
As the COBRA clock was ticking down, I realized that I needed to find a solution to get health insurance for myself and my wife at the end of the COBRA period.
The internet was still fairly new and there was not much information available online. I spent a couple months calling insurance companies and searching the internet for an answer to the question "how to get health coverage for a diabetic."
I finally found a solution. And I could fix my boredom with the solution as well.
I became a financial advisor and started my own business.
As a business owner, I was able to set up a health plan for myself and my wife and have my business pay for it. Even better, because it was a business health plan it was guaranteed issue. The insurance company had to accept me and my diabetes.
I had success as a Financial Advisor because I had over 15 years experience managing my own portfolio, and more importantly, I could explain things so it was easy for anyone to understand. One thing I noticed on many client summary sheets was that they had the wrong kind of health insurance for what their needs were.
I helped them get that corrected and after a while, I noticed that some of the referrals I was getting from my clients were friends or family that also needed help with health insurance questions.
Many of these referrals were for couples that were planning to start a family. These couples were typically between 30-40 years old, owned a home, and both spouses worked. Their health insurance needs were much different than other clients because of the cost to have a baby.
So I used my engineering mindset to begin analyzing health plans to see which would be best for maternity care and the delivery of a baby.
On March 23rd, 2010, the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. I realized that the rules of the insurance industry were going to change dramatically, and in order to keep up with client demand, I would have to create a website.
I began learning how websites worked, how to write HTML code, how WordPress worked, how to do search engine optimization, how to promote a website, and most importantly, what other health insurance websites looked like and what content they contained. That's when I realized almost all broker websites were similar and had the same boilerplate content.
SPFInsurance.com was born on February 11, 2011, with the goal to provide detailed information about health insurance topics, including specific plan recommendations for people planning to have a baby.
The website has continued to grow since then and is considered an authority by Google in maternity insurance, HSA health insurance, and baby health insurance.
We have helped over 1000 families get health insurance and protect their families.
If you have questions or need some help with health insurance, life, disability, long-term care insurance, or financial planning. Call us and we'll be happy to answer your questions.
